Contest Shumlin, Write in Annette

This is to announce a statewide write-in campaign to prevent Shumlin from getting a free ride on a bunch of issues.  We are proudly trying to thus draft Annette Smith for the Progressive Party ballot in November.  (But If you hate Shumlin but want to take a Dam primary ballot for the AG race, then write in Annette Smith as a Dem.)

This is a principled protest vote against Shumlin’s mischief in promoting the colonization of Vermont by the corporate-military complex.  We’ve got three big beefs (or “beeves”):

1.  Aggressive support for ridgeline wind.

2.  Ramming the takeover of CVPS by Gaz Métro, a scam of historic proportions.

3.  Enthusiastic support for the F-35 basing

4.  Support for smart meters.

  1. This will be a great way to poll the Progressive community on the wind power issue.  If you oppose increased wind power development in Vermont, write in Annette Smith.  If you support increased wind power in Vermont, vote Martha Abbot.

Here is Martha Abbot’s position on wind power:

Statement on wind power by Martha Abbott

I wholeheartedly support wind power as one alternative to fossil fuels, to nuclear and to fracking.  Wind seems to me to be a very reasonable alternative to fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, oil spills, the destruction of the Gulf of Mexico, nuclear meltdowns in Japan and wars in the Middle East.  I think we should build wind and solar and set a goal of making Vermont energy self sufficient.

I would like to see Vermont find ways to develop its own resources (wind and sunlight and water) in ways that don’t involve big Corporations exploiting VT resources for profit.  That is why I was a vocal advocate for the State buying the dams on the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers a few years ago.

In Denmark, in order to encourage investment in wind power, individuals were encouraged to purchase shares in wind turbine cooperatives which then invested in community wind turbines. By 1996 there were 2,100 such cooperatives in the country. Now 86% of Danes support wind energy when compared with existing fuel sources.

And if we are going to build infrastructure of any kind, anywhere in Vermont, we should insist on using Vermont Union Labor to do it.
