  1. I drive an old beater so I probably couldn’t do 81.  However, plenty of folks pass me all the time who probably can and are doing 80+.

As often as I’ve pulled out the wrong card myself, I can well imagine how easy it would be with two that look as similar as those do.  I am so reassured to learn that all of the rest of the Dems are minding their highway p’s and q’s.

This story should soon die of boredom.

  2. Kristin Carlson attempted to get Lt. Governor Brian Dubie’s reaction to Sen. Shumlins egregious driving/ i.d. infraction but she, too, was unable to locate the elusive “campaigner”.

  3. I feel kind of bad for whoever was hosting the forum Speedy said he was on his way to. Calling the forum’s content “some bullsh*&t” won’t win you many votes from whatever group it was.

  4. So: quick poll: what’s the fastest you’ve ever driven on the Vermont interstates?

With qualifications/under particular circumstances/considering context etc. . . . (also, we’re only talking Vermont and I’m keeping it only to this century for ease of recall).

I’ve driven 180km/h on I-89. However, it was NOT my car (yet). AND I kept my hands off off the steering wheel the entire time from 140km/h to 180km/h. It was a test drive of a dealer car and I was checking for vibrations, alignment, acceleration, road noise etc. It passed.

I also road tested its handling characteristics; but, obviously, that did not occur on the interstate. Also, that particular driving experience is the subject of another candidate run-in w/the law.

  5. …they would advise me not to respond since I’m also running for office.

In my defense, I went way faster in Maine.  But it was just a youthful indiscretion, I swear.  And the sun was in my eyes.

  6. ‘Most everyone’s sped in their lives, especially trying to get to an appointment (no matter what “bullshit” it was)…. I don’t, actually, hold other people- regardless of title- to higher standards than I hold myself.  In fact, I consider that an odd thing to do.

  7. Last fall I got a speeding ticket.  I don’t normally speed, and it was a weird situation.  I was behind a huge truck pulling a jumbo pay-loader – you know one of those big construction things.  It was belching all kinds of smoke (diesel I guess) and throwing up junk – little rocks and such.  I passed.  There was a car right in front of the tractor trailer, so I passed that car too and pulled back into the right lane.

I did pass really quickly for 2 reasons.  One, it made me nervous to be driving beside that huge jumbo rig, and two, I was driving a different car.  The car has a variable transmission, so one does not hear the acceleration in the same manner one hears it in a regular gas-powered car.

As soon as I pulled into the right lane, the unmarked police car I passed that was sitting right in front of the giant rig, turned on his flashers, and I pulled right over.

Yup… I got a ticket.  And, it didn’t matter one iota that the big rig was throwing up debris and smoke as it was climbing the long hill.

What surprises me most in Shumlin’s case is that it immediately made the evening news.  My speeding ticket didn’t make the evening news.  Politically speaking, I wonder why the police released Shumlin’s data so quickly.  Could it be that there is a whiff of politics in the air???

  8. …right after finishing an auto racing class, took his brand new Corvette on 93 in NH up to something over 127 mph, at which point it turns out NH law classifies your vehicle as a low-flying aircraft. He never did tell us what his ultimate speed was. He needed a ride to work every day for a very long time after they caught him and revoked his license.

Back in my sports car-owning days, I didn’t live in VT, so I’ll plead the 5th on any speed over the limit. These days I generally putt around in a 7-yr old hybrid trying to maximize mileage and infuriating impatient teens who get stuck behind me, wishing they were doing 50 on certain dirt roads…
