Urgent call: all five candidates support recount, solicit volunteers. Please volunteer ASAP

by: JulieWaters

Wed Sep 01, 2010 at 14:07:58 PM EDT

Quick e-mail from the Shumlin campaign, signed by all five candidates (I'm assuming this went out to the other campaigns as well) indicating that if you want to volunteer for the recount, you can do so via this link.  It asks basic information (including who you supported in the primary to get a balanced recount team) and your district, etc.

The recount officially starts September 8th, so time is of the essence.

Per the e-mail:

Judge Crawford has informed us that the primary election recount will begin on Wednesday, September 8th. We need your help to make this process go as quickly as possible. The judge has asked that we submit a list of volunteers by Friday morning (September 3rd). We will need 40 volunteers from each county to complete the recount.

Each county clerk will oversee a recount team, who will be responsible for counting all of the ballots in that county. Normally, each candidate would recruit their own volunteers in each county, but in order to make this process happen as quickly as possible, all five of us have agreed to put out the call generally and nominate the volunteers together.

The more volunteers we can recruit in each county, the faster the recount can be completed. Please help if you can, especially if you have experience with elections or if you are on the Board of Civil Authority. Once we have a list of volunteers, we will submit them to Judge Crawford, so the process can begin on time. If you know people who might be interested in volunteering, please forward this email to them.

This is urgent folks: those of us who are concerned about how long a recount will take should be the first to sign up, if at all possible.

Information not yet known: are you able to volunteer for a single day or do you have to volunteer for the entire recount?  Is there a screening process?

Regardless, please volunteer if you can.  The sooner we can get this completed, the sooner we can get to the work of taking Dubie down come November.

Done. (4.00 / 1)
After I signed up to volunteer I asked others around the office if they were interested and a co-worker of mine had a great question. Will the recount happen in each of our counties or are we volunteering to travel to Washington county to count?

My understanding is that it is county by county (0.00 / 0)
I asked Racine about this last week and he said it would be by county so you can volunteer to do your own (or a neighboring) county.

Recounts occur at each county seat (0.00 / 0)
So, for example, the court house in St. J. will be the location for Caledonia county ballots to be counted, the county courthouse in Chelsea will be the location for Orange county, and so on.

If you checked the box on the signup form that said you'd be willing to volunteer in another county, then you may be used in a county other than your own, depending on how many volunteers are needed in each county vs the number who sign up.

Nice--I venture to guess (0.00 / 0)
this'll get done before the old Primary date.

Done! (4.00 / 1)
Two counters from our house - experienced counters even!

Done (4.00 / 1)
I'm experienced, too, so glad to get this ball on the road!

"It'll only take a week." No. It'll only take a week BUT (0.00 / 0)

Let me expand on my remarks so that all members of the Vermont Democratic Party, the press and other interested onlookers will understand.

#1: We won't be able to get started until 2 full weeks after the primary ended. I've thought about this and decided that as long as the recount is over 3 or even 4 weeks after the primary it will still be more or less before the old primary date, so it really doesn't matter that this gets dragged out because we want to be sure that the volunteers do a better job counting the ballots than the local justices of the peace and town clerks.

#2: The judge is going to demand that we show up in each county courthouse with 10 teams of 4 people each, so we're going to need 40 volunteers per county. I've asked VT Democratic Party Exec Director Robert Dempsey to coordinate the volunteers and there will be a website up tomorrow. All the other candidates are joining me in sending out an email asking for volunteers.

#3: I've discussed this with the Vermont Democratic Party Executive Committee and the other candidates and we all agree that there are well over 520 active volunteers in the party who won't mind giving up a day or two to recount the votes instead of working the phones, going door to door, arranging fundraisers, etc. After all, we have tens of thousands of VT Democrats who are signed up on the Town Committees.

#4: I have poured over the election results and have to say that nothing looks out of line with the results we have in hand right now, so I'm going to have to be pretty lucky to pull this off. I think the odds are something like one in ten million if the recount merely turns up random counting errors.

#5: I just owe it to some of my more disappointed supporters to put the party through this. Keeping those two or three hundred happy as opposed to ticking off tens of thousands of fellow VT Democrats seems an even trade to me.

Of course this is sarcasm (0.00 / 0)

My analysis of my own sarcasm:

Doug Racine

#1 shoulda known this and been willing to say it

#2 shoulda known and shoulda asked and shoulda been prepared

#3 of course there are not tens of thousands on the town committee lists; there should be but the candidates and office holders don't push the party organization to get this done; during reorg they are only looking for the minimum. As a matter of fact, if you studied the town lists you would find many elected officials are not formally members of the VT Democratic party because of being on a town committee list

#4 we already have Amy's admission they didn't do this or think about this at all

#5 the actions of the Racine campaign speak for themselves

Time to give it up! Stop the Recount!

You poured over the results? Poured what? Coffee, perhaps... (0.00 / 0)

Since this phrase keeps coming up and in the interest of keeping this blog faithful to its literate tradition, I would point out that you pour liquids; you pore over something in detail. So it may be that you poured yourself a cup of coffee to drink while you pored over the election results, but unlikely that it was the reverse.

Cheers, whatever you are pouring!

to volunteer in Rutland County.

The "headline" that all 5 candidates "support recount" is misleading and incorrect (0.00 / 0)
Julie

As you know for politicians (as for lawyers) words mean everything.  Unless I missed it, all 5 candidates never stated that they "support recount".  I believe both Deb and Pete stated that they supported the legal right to request a recount. http://bit.ly/cjOvjF

Shumlin - "I understand that Doug is going to exercise his legal right to a recount and I respect his decision."

Markowitz - "Although it was not my intention to initiate a recount, I respect Doug's right to do so under the law,"

Supporting Doug's right to request a recount is different then supporting the recount itself.

There is a huge distinction.  I know Doug to be a reasonable person and would urge his supporters to contact him as soon as possible to encourage him to withdraw his petition at the court hearing tomorrow 9/3/10.

Best,
Ed

If that type of hair splitting semantics is being engaged in ... (0.00 / 0)
then I will have to rethink my willingness to vote for Shumlin assuming he retains top spot.

We don't need more political office wannabes getting into office on nice sounding rhetoric and platitudes that turn out to be basically empty ... not too mention at odds with the public perception that was deliberately created by the nice sounding rhetoric and platitudes. If the likes of Markowitz and Shumlin really meant "I support Racine's right to request a recount, but I really disagree with his decision", then that is what they should have said.

So Mr. Shumlin ... here's a question: do you respect Mr. Racine's decision to pursue a recount or not? (I would have much rather talked to someone at Shumlin HQ, but apparently Shumlin doesn't want to be in touch enough to post a phone number on the site.)

then I will have to rethink my willingness to vote for Shumlin assuming he retains top spot.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for the laugh, I needed that.

Oh really ... (3.00 / 1)
I've been generally very positive about the state level Democrats. I've had specific differences, but I have always been perfectly willing to say they've been doing an okay to good job.

I've always been, and remain willing to, vote for either Racine or Shumlin. As a matter of fact I've voted for the state level Democratic nominees more often than not. Senator Mark MacDonald (D), Orange Cty has received my vote every two years since I've lived in Williamstown (almost 20 years). I'm actively doing campaign work for the two state Rep nominees that won the Democratic primary in the Orange-1 representative district.

There is one exception to that: A litmus test ... - written out of a great deal of frustration with that whole issue. I'm beyond that - but I find the lack of willingness to take principled stands on issues of principle disturbing and notable none-the-less.

Or maybe you have some evidence to point otherwise?

I am not sure what is funny? (3.00 / 1)
Rama

Making threats does not help anyone.  Who are you going to vote for?  Dubie?  Peyton?

I think Pete was pretty clear that he respected Doug's decision to request a recount, but that was not a decision that he Pete would have made.

Maybe it is not the people who are talking that present the problem, but rather the people who don't listen carefully enough.

Best,
Ed

It's what you responded to Ed, (4.00 / 1)
If the public perception is that the candidates are supporting the recount effort, then there is a reason for that.

I do not believe anything in those public pronouncements was accidental, and even beyond this website I've heard folks voice the same public perception that the candidates are supporting the recount effort.

I have heard Shumlin say that in a couple similar situations (involving close election results) he declined to request a recount, but I have yet to hear him say he would not have made the same decision this year that Racine made.

And upon further reflection .. (0.00 / 0)
Shumlin:  "I understand that Doug is going to exercise his legal right to a recount and I respect his decision."

That sounds an awful like supporting the right and decision to engage in a recount.

'Nuff said for me.

Supporting a right is a lot different then supporting the substance of a decision (0.00 / 0)
For example, as a member of the ACLU, although I am jewish, I support the right of Skokie, Illinois Nazis to March.  Although like Jake and Elwood Blues, I "hate" Illinois Nazis.  So I support the right to march, but not the message of the march or the substance of the marchers.

I know that this is not a great analogy, but I think it drives home the point.

"Shumlin released a statement Friday afternoon saying he respects Racine's choice to seek the recount. On Thursday, Shumlin told WDEV-FM's "Mark Johnson Show" that if he were Racine, he would not seek a recount."
http://bit.ly/cjOvjF

Rama, you can deny it if you want and I agree with you that code is not the preferable way for politicians or anyone to speak, but it is clear to me that Pete does not agree with Doug's decision.

Best
Ed

When will I hear back? (0.00 / 0)
So I registered to volunteer by clicking the link as soon as I read this GMD post and have not heard back. When can I expect a phone call? And the recount is to start on Wednesday...

I'd expect them to start calling folks on Monday (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure they're dealing with the logistics of things like the chain of custody for the ballots, printing out whatever documents need to be signed by counters, and so on.

We're already phoning folks. (0.00 / 0)
I've got a list that I was given of volunteers, whom I've been calling with the information script.  Most likely someone will be calling you over this weekend.

[ Parent ]
I got called twice-- Friday night and Saturday morning. (0.00 / 0)
Randomly, one of the calls came from someone I know :)

I was told that people who didn't volunteer until Friday aren't on the list they submitted to the judge but will be called again if the recount goes past this Friday.
