A Very Brady Lt. Governor: Dubie and the DC Sleaze Machine

In response to Matt Dunne's attempt to make an issue of Lt. Governor Brian Dubie's schedule in the waning days of the election, Team Dubie attempted a classic Rovian turn-the-issue-on-its-head maneuver by demanding Dunne release his schedule in an attempt to make an issue of Dunne's absences.

Dunne has responded with the information, and in doing so quickly, has taken the wind out of Dubie's counter-attack (I'm glad somebody in Vermont besides Bernie appreciates the value of rapid response!).

Still, like any political issue, there's always a trail of breadcrumbs to the next issue if you know where to look - and thankfully, an astute GMD reader knew exactly where to look and sent me an email. From the AP (emphasis mine):

"My schedule as a part-time legislator is an open book as all of the records are public, including when I paid back the state for any day that I missed," Dunne said in a written statement. "However, in the interest of transparency, we are compiling those public records for anyone who wants to see them."

The request for Dunne's schedule came from Brady Toensing, a Washington, D.C.-based lawyer who is handling Dubie's schedule request issues.

The part of this report to keep an eye on is that name: Brady Toensing. Toensing isn't just some local attorney with a shingle on his door - he is a Washington GOP insider.

So the question is, if Dubie is so confident about his re-election (and is such an upstanding guy), why is he turning to a high powered member of the GOP beltway sleaze machine to go after Dunne?

Background: Digenova & Toensing, Mr. Toensing's Washington firm is a big-name Republican lobbying outfit. And by "Republican," I don't simply mean that they favor Republican clients, I mean these are people on a mission that goes back many years... sordid details on the flip...

odum :: A Very Brady Lt. Governor: Dubie and the DC Sleaze Machine
From the WaPo in '98:
[Victoria] Toensing, a former federal prosecutor, and [Joe] diGenova, a former U.S. attorney here, wear a number of hats. The law partners are the outside counsel for a House committee's investigation of the Teamsters union and its ties to the Democrats. The couple also represent the committee's Republican chairman, Dan Burton of Indiana, in a probe of whether he improperly demanded campaign donations from a lobbyist for Pakistan. Toensing represents Gingrich's wife, Marianne, on ethics matters.

More recently, Media Matters fleshes out the family firm's history in the context of their unchallenged "analysis" on CNN and ABC of the Valerie Plame Scandal, and Karl Rove's unindicted role in the affair:
Toensing was President Reagan's deputy assistant attorney general and chief counsel to former Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ). DiGenova has been described as a "confidant" of independent counsel Kenneth Starr during the Monica Lewinsky investigation [The Baltimore Sun, 9/21/00] and as "a former federal prosecutor now working for House Republicans" [The Washington Post, 2/23/98]. In 1998, Toensing and DiGenova angered House Democrats by repeatedly discussing the Lewinsky investigation in the media while under contract with the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to investigate the Teamsters union [The Washington Post, 2/13/98].

That's right. Ken Starr. Monica Lewinsky. The Clinton impeachment. Dubie is running with that crowd. It doesn't get much ickier, folks.

Now lest you think that the apple may have fallen across the park from the tree (although since he is, in fact, working for his parents' business, I don't know why one would assume he isn't part and parcel to the sleaze), here's Brady himself on CNN in 2002 discussing the rights of Bush-labeled "enemy combatants" who may happen to be US Citizens:

BRADY TOENSING, ATTORNEY: Well, if the judge follows Supreme Court precedent, I think that they'll have to find that a United States citizen, once they're designated as an enemy combatant, can be held.

NEVILLE: And that's OK by you -- his rights are not being violated?

TOENSING: Well, I don't know if they're being violated. The judge is going to look at that under a habeas corpus motion.

But the Supreme Court has said that United States citizens can be held by military tribunal if they are designated as enemy combatants. And, in fact, they can be executed.

Why the interest in Vermont? Well, Brady lives here and is been involved in Charlotte's Zoning Board of Adjustment. He's also friendly with Kevin Blier's local religious right/anti-gay organization, the Center for American Cultural Renewal/Vermont Renewal.

In fact, rumor is that he was involved in the ethics attacks on Elizabeth Ready that caused her to lose her post as State Auditor to Randy Brock.

If so, that's two high-profile races over two cycles - which would leave little doubt that Toensing is a living, breathing straight line of connection between the Vermont GOP and the Washington GOP slime machine.

But the question remains unanswered; why is Dubie getting his hands dirty with this guy?

Maybe he's scared. Dunne is looking dangerous in the waning days. Perhaps his internal polling has him looking for options.

Or maybe Dubie's just not the boy scout he presents himself as.

Stick to the Issues, Please (1.00 / 1)
Why can't we stick to the issues? Let's face it, Dunne blew it by going down this "how hard do you work?" mode. It backfired on him when Dubie threw the same question back at him. Luckily, Dunne was agile enough to kill the story after 24 hours -- but it was a long 24 hours. In my opinion, Dunne's stuck on this one, embarrassingly so. He should have moved off of it once he got the media's attention. Instead, he kept hitting that same note and sounding a bit whiny about it. Worse, he's allowing Dubie to avoid the real issues in this debate. You know, things like Dubie's support of the war, his right-to-life connections, his love for Bush, and his general goofiness.

Okay, Matt, now you've got the media's attention and all it's amounting to is a ridiculous exchange of calendars. And, Odum, who cares if the guy who asked Dunne for his calendar lives in D.C. part time. So does Bernie, for crying out loud -- for the last sixteen years. Besides, is that really where we want to carry this debate? I hope not.

Please, Matt, ditch the calendar talk and take advantage of the spotlight on you and talk about how right-wing Dubie is on almost every issue -- except windpower, that is.

Odum's "inside baseball" approach to politics won't get anyone anywhere. But we all knew that already I assume.

The Free Press... (0.00 / 0)
... certainly doesn't seem to mind the work schedule thing. And it works pretty well with the "disengaged" vibe that they and others people feel about Dubie...

And it brought attention to the Lt. Guv race, that probably wouldn't have happened without it...

Pretty damn clever, I'd say.

Yeah, although... (0.00 / 0)
...in the interest of full disclosure, I haven't been too big on it - at least the way it's been done. I think turning it into a "gotcha" isn't a clean fit, based on the history of the office. Going purely positive with a "wouldn't Vermonters rather have a full time advocate it the office" wouldve done the trick just as well and felt a lot better.

On the other hand, the press can be pretty pavlovian about this stuff, so maybe they wouldn't have noticed.

To be sure, but... (0.00 / 0)
...I never said it was pretty, just effective...

I'm quite certain that without the "gotcha," the press would never have covered it.

I'm not saying it was planned, but ironically, I think it was Dunne's forceful rebuttal to Dubie's counter-charge that really resonated with people.

It kept it in the news and that's what Dunne needed. And, within 24 hours, he came out on top, while making Dubie look like a sleazy politics as usual guy.

I agree with what Abbey (I assume it's the same person) said on Freyne Land -- I hope Dunne uses this new spotlight to talk about more substantive issues.

But sure, we'd all love to be more noble and thoughtful, but unfortunately, even in Vermont, good politics is not always so noble.

But sure, we'd all love to be more noble and thoughtful, but unfortunately, even in Vermont, good politics is not always so noble.

A slippery slope I refuse to climb onto. Honor is too important to me.

Of course it is easy for me to say that, especially these days, since I'm a blogger. People (like Abbey, for example) forget what it is they're reading when they come to these places. This is a blog - a "web log." People like you and me just using the internet as a free speech zone and grabbing our little corner (another misunderstanding is that it's not just the internet thats a free speech zone, its somehow every single persons individual web page that must be as well...but I digress).

If I feel that Dubie was showing genuine cowardice by hiding from debates, there's no reason on my web log I can't say that. If I were running an actual campaign, there's no way I would step up and say that. It would be inappropriate.

Long way of saying bloggers just get to say whatever they feel like saying, as blogging is still essentially a personal journal made public for the world to see and participate in -  and in some ways that's a real luxury.

Not to beat this to death, but... (0.00 / 0)
I didn't say that I approved, I'm just describing the political reality in today's media culture.

The only way Dunne could possibly get any media coverage in the low profile Lt. Guv race was as a result of some kind of "drama."

And, in this case, the drama was not really of Dunne's making. It was Dubie's counter accusation that Dunne was shirking his duties, which was certainly not true and ultimately made the most news.

I doubt strongly that the Dunne campaign could have orchestrated it so well, but the facts were on their side, Dunne won that round handily.

I also don't think there's really anything all that dishonorable about suggesting that Brian Dubie doesn't really earn his $61,000 salary, cuz I don't think that he does -- though in all fairness, that's more the fault of the current role of the Lt. Guv.

And while maybe the word "coward" is a bit too hot, I don't think there's anything wrong with calling Dubie on his "disengaged" Rose Garden campaign strategy.

Look, I don't like cheap shots at all. And if I were a campaign manager, I'd be very interested an extremely honorable and transparent campaign.

So, I stand by my statement that it is unfortunate that good politics aren't always noble. Again, not an endorsement, just a statement of fact.

(By the way, though I know it's not your fault, I wouldn't condone sticking Dubie's head on a duck with a blinking "Quack! Quack!" cartoon bubble above him like the anti-Bush DSCC ad currently in the left-hand sidebar.)

sure it's my fault... (0.00 / 0)
...I approved the ad. Again, this is a very different arena. Or rather, it's not an arena at all. It's a web log.

Although I cant say I see what's objectionable about it. It's a play on "lame duck." Kinda stupid maybe, but not the same as, say, putting somebody's head on a chicken, which would actually be intended as an insult. "Lame duck" is not an insult. It's political slang.

Not objectionable... (0.00 / 0)
...just childish...

Which to me has the same effect of diminishing the qualtiy of public discourse in the same way that "gotcha" politics does.

But, I'll leave it at that, because I think our above debate here exposes the limitations of blog-only discussion -- which encourages the parsing of language -- leading the participants to make assumptions about each other's positions which aren't necessarily accurate.

A dynamic that would likely not happen to the same degree in person.

Dubie's connection to the sleaze machine (4.00 / 1)
I found the connection to the sleaze machine to be very topical, and concerning. It tells me a lot of new information about Dubie. He'll stoop to this crap to win. He's plugged into the machine, and now he's going to owe them some favors. He's gone from being a guy who was pretty much just trying to keep the office from anyone who wanted government to do anything, to a more dangerous player who now owes a favor to the really scary people in Washington. As to why, I think he's hearing footsteps for sure.

I wonder who approached whom though? Dubie doesn't seem all that concerned about the race himself, is this maybe an attempt to stop a guy (Dunne) that the R's think is going to beating them in VT for a lot of years to come?

On the Issues (0.00 / 0)
I don't like the calendar issue either, but Matt has been running an excellent issues-oriented campaign all around the state for a year. He didn't get any traction in the press until he came up with the calendar gambit. It's a sad commentary on the Vermont press that this is what it takes to get a serious candidate covered. Now that we're there, I too hope that Matt can go back to issues - where he is top flight (oh dear, bad turn of phrase).

Victoria Toensing (0.00 / 0)
This woman along with her husband I beleive, Joe diGenova were always pushed by CNN and MSNBC as the Republican go to's during the Monica Lewinski spew.

When intervied on TV and I remember her well - Red hair she always looked into the Camera at a 45 degree angle. I always thought it paculiar as I think most right wingers, something in their DNA or what?

Anyway her sickening and odd quarter turned talking head is alwys up to the hilt. I gotta wonder if there's a Pombo connection?  Connecting the dotted lines through Gov. Lite.

Anybody with any investigatory time might want to explore...
