Crazy F#@#ing Hippies...!

by: Dave the Rave

Fri Mar 02, 2007 at 23:18:03 PM EST

(Dave "the Rave" Ravenwood -- who is, as you can see, an extraordinarily talented political cartoonist -- has done me the honor of working with me to capture part of the reality all of us doing impeachment work have encountered. As New Mexico and Washington state forge ahead, Vermont's bill still languishes, for fear, ironically, of upsetting the enablers of this criminal "administration." Thanks, Dave. You've captured what we've all felt. - promoted by Kagro X)

Hi folks. (4.00 / 4)
This political cartoon is the product of a collaborative effort between myself and Kagro X.  For all intents and purposes, he came up with the whole concept and text; I came up with a way to illustrate his concept (adding a few of my little detailed flourishes).

Three cheers to the good people of Vermont who are leading the fight on Impeachment.

  -- Dave.

And it shouldn't go without mention... (4.00 / 2)
that Dave is working hard to establish himself as a pro in the illustration biz. He's actually living in London, which means you can give your next project the cachet of an an "international artistic collaboration" by letting him bring your vision to life.

Thanks again, Dave.

Impeach!
Convict!
Remove!

. . . and then

DEPORT!

How many countries are ready to seek extradition?  Let's give them the guy who has committed so many crimes in their respective countries.

New Mexico update. (4.00 / 5)
Impeachment expected to reach the floor -- yes, the floor -- of the New Mexico Senate today.

Yes, today.

Gaye Symington, what are you afraid of?

The New Mexico Senate is 24-18 Dems to GOP. 57% D.

The New Mexico House is 42-28 Dems. 60%.

Vermont is 23-7 and 93-49-8. 76% and 62%, without even factoring in the Progressives, who actually had to introduce this bill because Democrats wouldn't.

What are you afraid of?

No state convention that passed a resolution last year had any net losses of Democratic seats, despite the universal prediction of leadership that impeachment would "hurt Dems at the polls."

No state. None.

In fact, your neighbors in New Hampshire turned their state government on its head.

New Mexico is smoking you.

Yes, facts.  And it didn't even require a multi-hundred thousand dollar study to investigate the usefulness of a study to look into the public interest in conducting a study on whether or not they should bring the issue up.

I'm sorry for the sarcasm and cynicism.  I get so much shit around here (yes, and elsewhere) for wondering what and when the Dems are going to do something bold, yet I still haven't seen all too much that is.

That comic up is hilarious though.

I should add... (4.00 / 4)
that there were no fewer than 12 such resolutions passed at the state level during the last election cycle.

Twelve states, no net losses for Democrats on the state or federal level.

Even states which didn't pass a statewide resolution realized benefits.

In Connecticut, where the population of the town of Washington fought a months-long battle with their local governing board to get a debate on the issue (and were ultimately denied, under the same excuse Vermont select boards are using today -- that impeachment doesn't effect their town), Democrats running for Congress all improved the performance of the party line over 2004's results, by about 4 percentage points.

Except for the district encompassing Washington, where Dems gained 18 points in the polls, and unseated a 20+ year incumbent Republican.

Me too... (4.00 / 4)
I'm seeing a lot of muddling on the Iraq thing from the Dems lately. At first, I thought it was going somewhere, but it seems to have faded quite a bit. The Senate is a frickin' joke. The Repubs (and Lieberman) aren't going to let ANYTHING progress on the Iraq thing other than 'surge' and 'stay the course', so I don't know what other hardball remedies can be played there. The House is another matter altogether. They need to start playing hardball and dirty pool if they have to, by pointing out, over and over again, how the anyone who believes that prolonging the war is 'supporting the troops' is full of shit. Have them ask how ensuring there are more dead and f-ed up soldiers is 'supporting' anything other than the funeral industry and the ravings of a delusional, megalomaniacal asshole.

I'm pretty despondent over all of this. The Dems have been on the defensive for so long, and are still so cowed by the right wing noise machine, it's like they don't know how to play offense. And what if, heaven forbid, Hillary wins? She can't even seem to admit her vote was a mistake (kinda like some other president we know that can't admit to any mistakes). Who is she going to get her marching orders from, the GOP and the DLC?

Battered Spouse Syndrome (4.00 / 4)
Even as the opposition for 12 years, they were hardly oppositional.  They exhibited all the signs of a battered spouse's learned helplessness -- even when that helplessness was mostly in their own unimaginative minds.

Remember, this is a majority party that was pushed into power in 2006 rather than one that took it.  They even tried to play defense all the way to November.  Our majority party Democratic leadership had to be pushed kicking and screaming by regular voters and the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party alike into just plain speaking truth about Iraq.

While Gingrich et al were taking power in 1994, the Democratic defense and response was "we're not as bad as the Republicans say we are."  When the Democrats were pushed back into control by an electorate feverish for change in 2006, it was all we could do to get most of the national leaders to say something more than "how could we possibly do any worse than the GOP?"

The art of governing does not necessarily mean a barrage of 24-7 smash mouth politics.  However, when your policies, your ability to govern and - well let's face it - the future of your country are hanging in the balance, maybe it's time to sound off like you have a pair.

Too many of these boys and girls in the House and Senate leadership are afraid of their own shadows and afraid of speaking truth against conventional (i.e. D.C. dissemblege) wisdom.

impeachment? cracy forking 'ippies!!!!! (4.00 / 4)
this is america at it's best. this is how it happens.
do not waver. do not back down. do not let up.
we turned a corner in november but that was only the beginning.
they will ignore us until the momentum builds to the tipping point.
then they will fight us with tactics the likes of which
have never been seen in this country.
three cheers for vermont and new mexico!
america must get back on the right track.
we owe it to ourselves and the rest of the world.

Yeah, you got it (4.00 / 4)
At least for the most part. I'm not sure all Democrats deserve to be tarred with the same brush. But yeah, it's frustrating as hell.

And the drawings are very good, Dave.

Agreed w/"most part" (4.00 / 2)
I will certainly not and will never tar them all.

On too many days, however, I still feel as if the entire "Wellstone" contingent of the Democratic Party in D.C. would fit in one elevator.

C.F. Hippies (4.00 / 2)
The Wellstone contingent is much larger than elected members realize. There are too many DLC Blue Dogs around, to be sure, but they are learning that the antiwar, pro-impeachment fleas have reached a record infestation and they've yet to find a flea collar that works.

Congrats to Dave and Kagro X for capturing the party divide perfectly.

I still favor the action of people in all parties to express their discontent during the March 17-19 activities by re-registering as Independents.  If millions do that, it will wake them up to their fleas pretty fast, a it'll shut down part of their messaging pipelines during fundraising season. And folks can shift back in time to take part in the primaries, if they wish.
