Ben and Jerrys Moving Planet Poster For Vermont

Come join Moving Planet Vermont, the largest climate action ever held in Vermont at the State House in Montpelier at 2pm on Saturday Sep. 24.

Let’s show our support for a bold vision for a just transition to a sustainable future.

After Irene, Beth Sawin, a mom, biologist, and co-director of Climate Interactive, who lives in Hartland asked:

How to make good decisions, under pressure of time and in the face of loss, suffering and immediate need?

She answered her own question:

There is no perfect formula, of course, but from my community a few key messages emerge:

  • Re-build with a transition to clean energy in mind.
  • Rebuild with future disruption in mind.
  • Keep the decision making process open.
  • Make the links, from dirty energy to devastated communities.
  • We can connect the dots between events we just lived through and global rise in greenhouse gases concentrations, and we can work together with others around the world to help phase out the pollution that makes future Irenes ever more likely. And, as we rebuild, we can make Vermont a stronger, smarter place, powered by clean energy and ready for the extremes our already destabilized climate will likely send our way.

The unique political dynamics of Vermont put us in an optimal position to enact bold climate legislation. In so doing, Vermont can show other states that such policies invigorate communities, encourage healthy lifestyles, do not hurt business, and raise our collective consciousness about our natural environment, all while allowing us to move into a healthy future.

    1.      I remember writing a report in 5th grade on solar, wind, geo-thermal, and hydro energy, that was 1976. I assumed, in my 10 year old brain, that soon, we would be using those forms of energy, as they made so much sense.

Now, my 45 year old ears hear about oil spills, and nuclear plant explosions and coal sludge and where are we going to put all the fuel rods and all the CO released by processing tar sand, and that when the air warms up- it can absorb more moisture, and that China and Germany heat LOTS of water with the sun. So, my 45 year old brain has gotten me off my 45 year old a$!, and I am going solar hot water on November 4th.  We all have our limits.

A friend asked me, “Do yo really want that thing in the middle of your yard?”  Well, actually it’s not in the MIDDLE of the yard, and, if we don’t start thinking outside the box…Many thanks to Solar Addison County and VPIRG.

I will also wish a great party to Moving Planet Vermont.  I will save the gas I would use to drive, and view the event online.  Cheers!
