Vermont Yankee--Entergy rolls out its strategy for relicensing

by: Jack McCullough

Sat Jan 08, 2011 at 10:04:13 AM EST

Entergy takes another step in its campaign to win the trust of Vermonters.

Here's the sequence of events, as reported in today's Brattleboro Reformer.

Step 1: April, 2010--find leaks in three of the actuators for Vermont Yankee's four safety relief valves. Fix the leaks during refueling.

Step 2:

In an analysis completed on Oct. 25, Yankee engineers concluded "there was firm evidence that the condition may have existed for a period of time greater than allowed by the technical specifications."

Step 3: Report the event to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on December 22.

Step 4: keep running those sappy "I am Vermont Yankee" ads on TV. Ignore the fact that nobody much cares how nice the employees of Vermont Yankee are, but we care very much about whether they are competent enough to run the plant and honest enough to be trusted with the public health and safety. I keep waiting for them to identify one of their employes as a fork and spoon operator from Sector 7g, but so far no luck.)

Good work for Reformer reporter Bob Audette to come up with this. The source for some of his analysis was an e-mail from Vermont Yankee. Apparently no explanation was available for why the information about the leaks, which VY had in April, or its analysis of the leaks, which they had in October, wasn't disclosed to the NRC until just before Christmas.

Oh, and if you're wondering, the collection of press releases and news updates on the Vermont Yankee web page  doesn't say anything about this latest set of leaks. Not even in the section they call "We're all entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts".

Maybe, in Entergy lexicon, "facts" means "stuff we couldn't keep covered up any longer".

I am (a zombie for) VY (4.00 / 2)
Those commercials are so creepy.  Every one that appears on camera acts like zombies.

I get the distinct impression that they don't believe a word they are saying and it shows on their faces that they are doing irreparable harm to their very souls to read the script.

And, in order to recite those falsehoods on camera, they all have been dosed with massive amounts of some anti-anxiety drugs which makes them all look like they've had a lobotomy.

And what is it with the school that they allowed Entergy's production company to shoot in there?  Especially since it's all lies recited by brain-dead zombies.

Very Twilight Zone (0.00 / 0)
Stepford-like trance comes to mind whenever I see them lurking in ads on websites, in print, on tv. That eery smile does nothing for them. It is oh-so obvious & mere shilling for Entergy corporate, their own six figure incomes, culture & lifestyle. It's is all about them w/no thought to what VT wants & is in our best interests or future.

Entergy has embedded themselves in VT via Entergy sponsored & nuclear front connected VTEP, their propaganda ministry which connects VT businesses throughout the state, as well as the employees through their IBEW membership.

With their slanted 'studies' & polls, as well as their regular op-ed pieces delivered to VT news media which use misleading & inaccurate information to distort the issues & truth w/sole purpose to mislead the gullible public.

Entergy fearmongerers IAM4VY, VT businesses, also appear in print, online & TV ads claiming that they will have to leave the state if VY is closed & their elec cost will be unaffordable. Completely false, in fact the opposite is true.

They as well as online pronuclear activists are still comparing the $42/MW we are paying to the $61/MW we will be paying for H-Q, leaving out the fact that the PPA w/Enexus was slightly higher and also included regular annual increases based on three indices which has VT paying more than projected price for electricity. The variable additional rate, which steadily increases is levied annually starts above the cost of living.

In a letter to the Rutland Herald 12/30/2010, a letter to editor informs us that their biggest stars Chuck Baraw, Stoweflake Resort & Butch Cersosimo do not even use any electricity which is produced by VY at all.

According to source, Stoweflake gets power from Stowe Elec Co which does not buy any power from VY.

Cersosimo chose to power his wood chip facility w/a deisel generator rather than pay this great price through his local elec company which does buy power from VY.

I think Entergy should be asked & forced if necessary to recant this untruthful information, as they had to pull their full pge newspaper & tv ads last year in yet another media blitz, claiming their power to be be carbon emmission-free.

Forced to come forward (4.00 / 1)
after dragging a&ses for many mos, here comes yet another weekend press release. Who knew?

Since Entergy has displayed their propensity of timing the releases of the incidences in this continuing debacle, only releasing one incident shortly before another 'mishap' or 'event', they routinely come on the heels of another. One would now wonder when the next shoe will drop.

Great catch. Though Mr. Audette pretty much filled in the blanks, many thanks for recognizing the import & bringing this to the forefront.

Although I have been having an eery suspicion something was afoot as my crystal ball has been showing a steady emergence of cloudy images, my cat could have seen this coming.

Not too difficult to recognize that any structure which has continued to fall apart for many years, obviously is not going fix itself. Most definately not a nuclear power plant which needs a $100 million condenser for starters.

In one of the recent reports, VY POP or Fairewinds, said that pipes were corroding from the inside out & that it is also microbial. Metal fatigue & embrittlement cannot be stopped.

Given these facts, VY may not make it to 2012 much less 2032. How these knowledgable engineers can be claiming it can run for 20 more years after that is far beyond the pale.

My old car (0.00 / 0)
I took my 40 year old car, that has received top-notch service throughout it's life, and started driving if 20% faster.  And I think that I can do this for another 20 years without the engine having any serious problems.

In Vermont!

Really, folks, just how many 40 year old cars are even still running in this state, and aren't all rusted out from driving it through the winter?  Radioactivity is worse than salt on metal fatigue.

But the beautiful thing about it is that when VT Yankee does explode due to Entergy's negligence and forces the exacuation of all of New England and the Maritime Provinces, Entergy won't have to pay one dime in damages!

The Nuclear Power industry simply can not exist without 100% government 'communism'.

No plants are built without massive Federal money.

No insurance company has ever, or will ever insure a nuclear plant.

No corporation is ever responsible for radioactive leakage.

No corporation is responsible for the incredibly deadly waste that lasts hundreds of thousands of years.

Basically the way these things work is this:  The taxpayers pay for the construction, pay for the fuel, pay for the decommissioning, pay for the waste storage (for longer than civilization has existed so far).

But a private, for-profit company get to run the place for 40 years and take every dime the plant could ever make as profit, and they get to walk away in the end without paying one cent back to the taxpayers.

Nuclear Power is the biggest boondoggle America has ever seen.

No Relief for Vermont Yankee

On December 22, 2010, Vermont Yankee's owner informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that workers had determined during the recent refueling outage that two of the four main steam safety relief valves had problems likely rendering them inoperable during the prior operating cycle.
