Dubie's friends in Massachusetts

by: Jack McCullough

Thu Oct 14, 2010 at 11:00:00 AM EDT

It was great to hear Peter Shumlin taking the Entergy issue right to Brian Dubie yesterday. As reported on VPR, Shumlin launched a powerful attack on Dubie's pro-Entergy partisanship:

"My experience with both you and the governor is that you are an apologist for Entergy Louisiana stockholders and Entergy Louisiana and you won't stand up for Vermonters."

Dubie weakly claimed that he doesn't work for Entergy, although it would be hard for Dubie or Douglas to prove that.  Meanwhile, Yankee isn't the only Entergy plant pumping tritium into the water. Down in Massachusetts, the PatriotLedger reports that Entergy's Pilgrim plant is doing the same thing:
After dropping steadily for much of the summer, levels of a radioactive isotope at one of the Pilgrim nuclear plant’s monitoring wells have skyrocketed above federal drinking water standards again.
And the response of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission?
Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said his agency is satisfied that Entergy is taking the right steps to solve the mystery at Pilgrim.   . . .  “They’re following the same protocol that’s been used – and used effectively – at other plants,” Sheehan said of Entergy.

Given that we're now seeing tritium in the aquifer around Vermont Yankee, is it really a good idea for Sheehan to stick with that line?

And, if you're in or around Plymouth, Mass., how long before you start seeing Entergy's "I am Pilgrim" commercials?

Like at Yankee? (4.00 / 1)
"They're following the same protocol that's been used - and used effectively - at other plants," Sheehan said of Entergy.

Lets hope not.

Pure Pilgrim.
Pure Yankee.

Time for the next step (0.00 / 0)
I'd like to see Peter running a commercial that lays out what our energy future looks like without VY. My read of this issue is that there are a lot of people on the fence, and very uncomfortably so, but are scared to move because they worry about power supplies and price.

The last 3 weeks of the campaign is a perfect time to look forward and paint a positive picture of a future without VY.

Broken record (0.00 / 0)
The Leg got an economic report from Carr/Kavet that shows the way.  You can create more jobs and lower electricity prices by investing heavily in renewables NOW than if we just relicense VY.

Well (4.00 / 3)
Those of us at Green Mountain Future ( http://www.GreenMountainFuture... ) have been running ads already highlighting Dubie's advocacy for keeping Vermont Yankee open.

Dubie himself has been repeatedly caught dialing in excuses relating to Vermont Yankee, from power deals in Quebec to companies threatening to leave Vermont.  I feel confident Vermonters will see straight through this to the need for Vermont Yankee to close, as scheduled, in 2012.

I'm sure a rational plan exists (4.00 / 1)
My point is that Peter Shumlin needs to get on the tube and outline it. There is a tipping point here if he can convince the undecideds that they are not facing a high price, or occasional brownouts. Pointing to websites is nice, but not in the context of the election.

Right now he is successfully establishing a problem ("Out of state carpet baggers making billions poisoning our land") but offers a 1 part solution ("Close the plant"). He needs to offer the full solution ("Close the plant and replace it with this and we'll not only be better off environmentally but also jump start ourselves in future oriented businesses.") Only Peter can do this.
