And a fun time was had by all (updated)

by: JulieWaters

Sun Jul 18, 2010 at 06:45:36 AM EDT

The Summit yesterday was very nice-- not sure how many people we had, but most of GMD's front page crowd was there, including Odum, JD, Jack, myself, Sue, Maggie, Caomhin and BP.  Mr. Baruth was there to host everything.  I brought my banjo and played a bit, and had a lot of nice conversations with people, some of whom I'd met before and some of whom I hadn't.  Steve Benen was there, and was polite enough to let me rant on about things for about two minutes as if he knew what I was talking about before I asked him if he had any idea who I was, which was very cute and kind of funny.

Among the candidates for the Governor's race, Racine, Shumlin and Bartlett showed.  Dunne had told me the day before he wouldn't be able to make it since he was at Solar Fest after doing a charity run in the morning, and Markowitz just didn't show (Publisher's note: Apparently, the Markowitz Communications Director was there, but I had no idea either. Er... next time, make sure some of the folks on the masthead know yer there if yer hoping to get acknowledged, eh?).

Steve Howard, Doug Hoffer, Jim Condos were there.  Dunne had two of his staffers attend and they were a lot of fun to chat with.

Mostly, though, I wanted to make this a post summit open thread.  Other GMD folks should feel free to edit this to include their own comments and/or photos.  I know there's a group shot of GMD out there somewhere, and if anyone wants to move the two candidate photos above beneath the fold and put the candidate photos up instead, that would be totally cool.

Dubie?? (0.00 / 0)
Oh, I forgot, he does not want to be seen with any of the Democratic candidates as someone might pose a question for both to answer.

Dubie doesn't want to be seen... (4.00 / 1)
...in any environment which is not very tightly controlled.  He's kind of a coward.

Sorry I missed it. (4.00 / 1)
I was also at Solarfest. Hope to make it next year!

I enjoyed it immensely (4.00 / 1)
... especially the chance to get reacquainted with blogger friends and to meet new ones.

There's something fun about this... (4.00 / 1)
...seeing people that you hadn't placed in a personal context before.

Quite a few of the bloggers were people I'd met before, but I hadn't met Charity before, so that was a nice treat, and I was glad to finally get to meet Doug Hoffler.  It was especially nice to finally meet Sue Prent, whom I think may officially be the sanest of the GMD front pagers.

Very true (4.00 / 1)
and this BP had a great time and succeeded in spilling nothing of consequence.

Thanks, Julie! It was great meeting you too, AND getting to hear you play, live! (4.00 / 1)
Although I can't imagine why you think I'm the sanest, I think I'll call you as a character witness the next time Mayor Manahan impugns that particular aspect of my make-up.

Mark and I spent the day hauling some sculpture down to the Portsmouth Museum in N.H., so this is the first opportunity I've had to post a "thank you" to Philip and J.D. and everyone else for the wonderful time we had yesterday.  It was such a great opportunity to put a face to the names of the people I've grown to know quite well, if only remotely, over the past year.  I am truly embarrassed that I was confused as to Kevin's identity; but you have to understand that tall people always throw me a little off guard, as I am myself rather low to the ground. I have it all sorted now, Kevin.  When next we meet I will be all poised and intelligent recognition.

Maggie and Arnie with their sweet hound; BP and Amy; the handsome Odom family glowing with youth and good health; Linda and her brownies.  I'll be able to visualize you all from now on!

Like Julie, I was delighted to finally meet our next Auditor, Doug Hoffer, and to listen quietly to questions and answers and snippets of conversation from all the people I respect so much. It made me realize how very much I still have to learn from everyone.

It was truly gratifying to have Doug Racine, Peter Shumlin and Susan Bartlett take time from their busy schedules to spend with us in the relaxed atmosphere of the beach.  And Matt Dunne should know that he was well represented by his articulate and charming team.

P.S. I missed getting to meet Lianne, (4.00 / 2)
but that gives me something to look forward to next year.  I know I'll bump into Nanuq very soon...and Ed?  Where were you Ed?  I was really hoping I'd get to meet you.

Thanks to everyone else as well.  It was an honor and a pleasure to spend time in such company!

Aww man (4.00 / 1)
I had a station event yesterday, which was a ways away, and had to watch my gas, plus I didn't want to drive around in Burlington with a broken turn signal....the truck gets fixed end of the week. I had planned to go but chickened out at the last minute.
Next time..........

I can relate. (4.00 / 2)
You just reminded me that my poor ol' '96 Volvo has been winking a "service" sign at me every time I got behind the wheel over the past six days.  'Guess I'd better do something about that, too.

More relating here... (4.00 / 1)
Adding insult to injury, hubby's axle broke in the ER parking lot when I tried to move it to the parking garage while awaiting the x-ray results on his cracked ribs. ER bill + major car repairs aren't exactly what we need right now. At least it didn't break on the highway on the way down there.

Yikes! (4.00 / 2)
Well, a friend who follows the planets informs me that that was par for the course last week.  Supposedly, this week is looking much better. Sometimes just surviving a week is a minor victory.

I forgot to mention Jack! (0.00 / 0)
I didn't get to speak with you really because you were doing such a great job of being everywhere at once, but I'll try to be more useful next year! I promise.

[ Parent ]
thanks (4.00 / 1)
Julie

I enjoyed meeting and talking with you, Sue, BP, JD, chef Maggie and so many others
I briefly met Odum but he wandered off after taking my walking piece and acting like it was the latest Superman comic book

thanks to all who worked hard to make it happen

Good... (4.00 / 1)
to finally meet you, too, Doug. Best of luck to you.

You can read JD's latest at five before chaos. Politics. Godlessness. Music. Films of questionable quality. It's all there, folks.

Thanks, Julie (0.00 / 0)
I was glad to finally meet you.

It was great to see everyone!  I missed the past two barbecues.  I had forgotten how much fun it is.

I WISH! (4.00 / 1)
Ericka, Sam and I were planning on coming.  I even made pasta salad in the morning.  But my beloved had been fighting some illness for days, and in the end we had to bail as it knocked her down flat.  We were all looking forward to it and very disappointed to not attend.

I'm sure it was a blast, even with all the damned politicians (*ahem*) there.  And the pasta salad is yummy--still quite a bit left in the fridge.

We're sad we missed this year (0.00 / 0)
Due to a minor injury on the part of my darling spouse, but it'll be on the calendar for next year. It sounds like a fine time was had by all. I wish I'd been able to hear Julie play live....

Beware the Everyday Brutality of the Averted Gaze

Thanks! (4.00 / 4)
It was great to see everyone. If you'd like to see more photos, I posted an album on my Facebook.
