Soon after calling the Supreme Court's decision on contraceptives "illogical," McDonnell blasts "the perverted notion of liberty that each individual should be able to live out his sexual life in any way he chooses without interference from the state" (pg. 15). It was essentially that "perverted notion of liberty," of course, that the Supreme Court would uphold in 2003 when it struck down Texas's anti-sodomy law.
Riiiiight.
I left Virginia in part to escape exactly that kind of thinking. I don't know about you, but I don't like people that think that way, I don't want them empowered here, and any politician who runs with people like that will meet my full-throated opposition.
Ask Mark Shepard.
Some of the feathers in the cap of Brian Dubie's new money hustler Bobbo:
* Supported 35 restrictive bills, (abortion) even with rape & incest. (Jul 2009)
* Pro-life; anti-partial-birth; pro-parental-notification. (Jul 2009)
* Reinstate Virginia's partial-birth abortion ban. (Jun 2008)
* Authored amendment protecting traditional marriage. (Jul 2009)
* Opposes cap-and-trade as congressional encroachment. (Jul 2009)
* Drill for oil 50 miles offshore, environmentally safely. (Jul 2009)
* Resist congressional encroachment & socialized medicine. (Jul 2009)
From the Deb Markowitz campaign:
As a legislator, he voted against outlawing pay discrimination and, as governor, he said that slavery was not "significant" enough to mention in his proclamation honoring "Confederate History Month."
After the BP disaster in the Gulf he told a energy conference sponsored by Big Oil that he "continues to lobby aggressively to drill for oil and natural gas without delay" off shore....Brian Dubie is raising money from Washington, D.C. Republicans because they truly believe he will bring this kind of social blueprint to Vermont.
Brrrrr, This is the company Brian Dubie chooses to keep. These are the people he chooses to raise money for him, to run his campaign, and I think the Markowitz campaign's assessment can't help but be on the mark.
We. DO. NOT. WANT. Nutter Virginia GOP values ANYWHERE NEAR the government of the state of Vermont.
Who's with me?
UPDATE: This just in from the Markowitz campaign. Press release in toto.
Markowitz Campaign Calls for Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie to Return Contributions from Fundraiser with Controversial Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell
BURLINGTON--Paul Tencher, campaign manager for Deb Markowitz, called for Brian Dubie to return contributions raised because of his association with controversial Virgnia Governor Bob McDonnell and issued the following statement. McDonnell sponsored a fundraiser in Washington, D.C. today for Dubie.
"Bob McDonnell once described working women as "detrimental" to families. He once wrote that it is "illogical" for birth control to be legal for unmarried couples and he condemned the "purging" of religions from our schools. In his masters thesis, he criticized federal tax credits for child care because they encouraged women to enter the workforce.
"After his election as governor, McDonnell is best known for saying slavery was not "significant" enough to be included in a proclamation supporting Confederate History Month. If these past statements aren't enough to make Brian Dubie return these contributions, McDonnell recently told a meeting of Big Oil executives he "continues to lobby aggressively to drill for oil and natural gas without delay" off shore even after the largest man-made disaster in U.S. history.
"This isn't just another D.C.-area politician that Vermonters might disagree with. This is someone out of the mainstream raising money to elect Brian Dubie governor. We need to know if Brian Dubie agrees with his friend Bob McDonnell or is he just taking his money? Bob McDonnell does not share Vermonters values and Dubie should return the money he raised with McDonnell to prove to Vermonters he disagrees with these positions."
UPDATE AGAIN:
And the hits just keep on comin'.
Wow, is THIS ever a head exploder.
From Alex Maclean at the Peter Shumlin campaign:
Today, one of the most conservative Governor's in the country, Virginia's Bob McDonnell, is helping raisemoney for Brian Dubie so Brian can unleash hisconservative agenda on Vermont...BobMcDonnell's conservative agenda includes stripping anti-discriminatory protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender state employees andadvocating for cutting childcare as it promotes women entering the workforce.
Frankly, it is not surprising that such a conservative is helping Brian Dubie's campaign. Brian is far too conservative for Vermont - from his opposition to a woman's right to choose to his desire to repeal the marriage equality bill that Peter fought so hard to pass, Brian's values do not line up with the values of most Vermonters.
Emphasis mine....and that "most Vermonters" most assuredly includes me. |
