VSH Canteen closes

by: Jack McCullough

Sat Dec 05, 2009 at 17:45:32 PM EST

From Vermont Digger:

After months of waiting for the axe, Curtis Sinclair was officially laid off today. He ran the Canteen at the Vermont State Hospital and was downsized with five other people who worked at the snack bar in a basement room adjacent to the mental health facility. The Canteen was shuttered on Friday.

Advocates fought the closing of the Canteen because they say the snack bar was the only place for mentally ill patients from the hospital to get a break from the wards. Last month, former patients, VSH workers and activists embarked on a letter-writing campaign and held a press conference at the Statehouse.

I've spent time in the Canteen, either to pick up a quick lunch or to talk to clients. A longtime state worker commented Friday that he's been having lunch there since the 1970's. To a person, every VSH employee I have talked to has been opposed to the closing of the canteen.

I was there yesterday.  There was free pizza for the patrons, and cake, and all their inventory of drinks was either already gone or on the way out the door. People working in the complex stopped by to wish the staff good luck, or express their appreciation for all they've done over the years, and now the place is closed.

Since we know the savings claims are bogus, let's hope a way can be found to reopen the Canteen when the Legislature comes back in January.

Need we say more???

I don't understand (4.00 / 1)
There's a lot I don't understand about Vermont, and that I hope to spend my free time investigating.  I'd like to know where crazy ideas and decisions like this come from.

Imposing a $20 fee on crime victims to get copies of their reports -- when other states just charge copying costs, 25 cents.

And closing a social outlet for people who are living in wards of a state hospital.  Aren't these the very people our tax dollars should be supporting in regaining health???

I'll take these two subjects and see what I come up, how ideas like these gain traction in Vermont.  I want to know, given the progressive label that comes with the Green Mountains and maple syrup, and seems phony.

excuse me (4.00 / 2)
but being a (comparatively) progressive state doesn't mean bad things don't happen; especially with a Bush-lite Republican governor (who is solely to blame for the closure of the Canteen)

but if you doubt the reality of our progressive "label", please find another state with anything even approaching our Congressional delegation; sure we have issues with some of them some of time (not always minor), but overall we're in a separate league, especially with Bernie Sanders

and if you think fees for crime victim reports is the measure of a state's progressive attitudes, you're missing it big time; how about one of the most progressive state income tax systems in the country? or the first with civil unions and now gay marriage? and are you aware of a little something called Efficiency Vermont? how about the VT Housing & Conservation Board? and think about it when you pay your income-sensitive education property taxes; and on and on; these are the things that demonstrate Vermont's progressive credentials

I think you're the same person who suggested there's nothing wrong with cutting wages for state workers in another diary; if so, I'm agraid I have to question your interest in or commitment to progressive policies

you're wrong (0.00 / 0)

You're putting crap on me that I never said, and obviously don't care about bad mouthing people wrongly.  Reminds me of some conservatives I hear about.

And you can point out what you don't like about policies, and I'll point out what I don't like.  Maybe we'll make a difference.

Check the history (4.00 / 1)
Mtnclimber has a total of four comments and none of them say anything supporting cutting wages for state workers.

[ Parent ]
I stand (0.00 / 0)
corrected; I was referring (mistakenly) to comments by GreenMtBoy on Dec. 5 in response to the wage cuts discussed in Julie's diary; I apologize to mtnclimber for the last sentence in my post

however, my other remarks stand
suggesting VT's rep as a progressive state are "phony" because a) the state charges $20 for a crime report and b) because the Gov. closed the Canteen is a huge leap and implies that the writer is not (yet) familiar with what has been accomplished

of course there's much more to do...

[ Parent ]
I agree (0.00 / 0)

There's much to do.

And I was giving examples -- and said so -- about two things I will try to investigate.

It's stupid to target residents of a state hospital for budget cuts, and it's stupid to charge crime victims $20 for a one page copy of a crime report.  Of course there is more.  Vermont really sticks it to poor seniors, but I want to learn more about that too.

sad day (4.00 / 4)
I went to the closing party, but I couldn't bear to stay. It was too sad seeing the place closed down on the pretense of saving money. Congratulations VSH Director Rowe, Commissioner Hartman, Secretary Hofmann, and Governor Douglas. You've succeeded in taking something from the people who have nothing. Perhaps you should spend a couple of years caged up in VSH like I did. Then you might have a better perspective on the wrong that you have committed.

Curtis Sinclair
former canteen coordinator
and former VSH patient

Curtis, I'm so sorry (0.00 / 0)
I wish I knew what to say.

Good for you Curtis (0.00 / 0)
It takes a certain amount of moxie to put a face on both sides of this issue,  Inside and out.  Clearly all mentioned in your post will spend a few extra days getting across the river when we all head out for our reward..... I would hope there is a special session in the "do unto others" class for Gov Jim... he did just finish laying off a veteran guard member who was scheduled to deploy the next week.... or maybe even the next day... saw something on WCAX...   Jim spends a lot of time saying what he thinks Vermonters want on TV.... even when we speak fairly clearly on the subject, and 180 degrees from what Jim pronounces.
