Amazingly enough, this story is not about Tom Salmon

Per today's Rutland Herald:

A Washington County sheriff's deputy on security duty Wednesday accidentally discharged his firearm inside a downtown Barre courthouse.

I'd suggest reading the full story for effect, but I'll give the summary: Sheriff's deputy brings personal gun to work.  Decides to take it to work because he's on a motorcycle and can't secure it properly.  I'm guessing the rest of the story goes something like this: Sheriff's deputy, thinking gun is unloaded, decides to play with it in courthouse.

Hijinks ensue.

Tom Salmon: GMD's answer to Tiger Woods (0.00 / 0)
Your headline shows that Tom Salmon is the  journalistic gift that just keeps on giving.

What's the difference between a car and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards.

Tiger Woods and his wife were out at 2:30 a.m. . . . apparently they went clubbing

Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn't decide between a wood and an iron.

**********
and: here we go, wait - for - it - . . . .  What do Tiger Woods and baby fur seals have in common?---They've both been clubbed by Norwegians!

It is a funny story but they save the best part of the joke until the end
"He will be back on duty most likely next week," Sheriff Hill said
Shouldn't this entire thing you know maybe investigated policy wise?

Love the picture! (4.00 / 1)
Well, I think a certain infamous Town Meeting has pretty much proven that there is no place or circumstance under which the wielding of a "personal" firearm won't be tolerated!

Deputy thought the gun was unloaded (4.00 / 2)
said Sheriff Hill.

Riiiiighhht.

That part of the story, I don't believe.

If it was a revolver, the deputy either knew or did not know.  There is no guessing about whether the gun is loaded.

If his gun was an automatic, the deputy may have claimed lack of knowledge of a round in the chamber and the Sheriff decided to let it go, regardless of the implausibility of scenario.

What's wrong with saying: the deputy didn't realize it was a bad idea to play with a loaded gun in the courthouse but at least the deputy maintained muzzle control?  Mmmm?  Let's face it, that's not much worse than the story in the paper without suspending a shit load of disbelief.

This deputy is exactly who we DON'T want having a firearm ... (0.00 / 0)
he's an obvious and clear danger to the public as long as he's allowed to carry one. The rather cavalier attitude on the part of the sheriff suggests the same can be said of him too.

This reminds me of a Montpelier City council meeting about ten years ago. A lawsuit against the city had been threatened by gun ownership rights activists, and because a (then) recent case in Barre involving transporting a loaded handgun had been decided in favor of the right to carry the city was holding hearings on changing the existing ordinance.

Among other things such as discharging the weapons, there was a clause in the ordinance saying firearms had to be kept unloaded unless actually in use (one would believe in hunting or the actual act of self defense).

A representative for one of the groups working to boot the ordinance, a lawyer no less, complained that insisting on unloading the weapons first opened her up to arbitrary enforcement. After all, she claimed, she often times wasn't aware whether or not her hand gun was loaded.

I vividly remember thinking "Lady, you are exactly the type of person I DON'T want having access to guns." She was a proven (by her own words) catastrophic event waiting to happen.

I am a firm adherent to the rights of gun ownership. In my opinion we should be allowed to have any weaponry of any type that is available to law enforcement.

But I don't want idiots like the lady lawyer I reference above or the above mentioned deputy having anything more powerful than a cap gun. Those people are genuine threats to the public.

It's about community ... RAMABAHAMA DOT NET (only it is still under construction ... isn't that life?)

Imagine if one of us lay folks had brought a loaded weapon into a courthouse and it fired on its own.  We'd be up in prison for years in no time.

When you wake up each morning look around you.  It might be the last time you get to do it.

Not if we were in Wyoming (0.00 / 0)
I hear you can get arrested for not having a loaded weapon there.

LOL Julie:  I had forgotten about Wyoming.  I've been there. The highway signs have bullet holes in them.  Yet, you check your guns in at the bar door.  I am not sure about getting busted for Not having a weapon out there, but it would not surprise me.
