I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone about the Westboro Baptist Church and their "God Hates Fags" (and just about everyone else) campaign.

Well, the bad news is that they're bringing their fear and hatred to Vermont. On Tuesday, September 1, they're planning to protest at the Montpelier High School from 7:20 to 7:50 am, then go to the Vermont State House from 7:55 to 8:25 am, finishing up at the Montpelier City Clerk's office from 8:30 to 9 am. Rather than paraphrase their hate-filled "press release," I'll post it after the fold.

A warning, though, don't go to the jump if you don't want to see the hate.

Sorry for all the hate, folks. I know how angry this makes me feel, and I'm not a particularly sensitive person. So I know some people will find this extremely distressing to read. But I do think it's important not only to know that these folks are headed for our fair state, but also to know exactly what kind of hate they're capable of.

Two thirds of me agrees with you. The other third wonders what would happen if they showed up and were totally ignored. They are depending on confrontation, media coverage, and controversy to get their message out.

these people thrive on attention.

The great thing about Phelps is that he's even too insane for the wingnuts. NO ONE supports him except his own family. The only way we can do anything for him at all is to give him attention.

I will say, however, that what people CAN do is to show up in large numbers and just pretend they're not there :)

It's clear from the rhetoric that they are looking for confrontation. These people are insane and haven't a hope in hell of persuading anyone otherwise. Just treat them as you would some poor lunatic wandering near Madison Square Gardens wearing tinfoil on his head and braying at the moon. They're nuts and do not warrent the validation of even our passing attentioin.

But it's just impossible to keep everyone from going out to engage them, especially when they are so vitriolic. I think really the only way to do it is to counter their numbers :-/

Some years ago, during the original civil unions debate, these rather strange folks from Westboro Baptist were kind enough to visit Montpelier to let us know how much god hated both those not like the Kansas visitors and Vermont in general.

There was a call for a counter demonstration, so I attended.

On my way into Montpelier I stopped and purchased materials suitable for a 2' x 3' poster, and on that poster I wrote "These Kansas folks sure are a queer Lott" (the reference to Trent Lott was because he had recently made some assinine comment regarding gays ... long since lost in my minds cavernous chambers).

Upon arriving I joined not the counter-demonstration but those queer Kansas folk. I stood shoulder to shoulder with them the entire time until they left.

I was sorry more didn't pick up on my simple little tactic.

If I can attend I will, but I won't be "counter-demonstrating". I'll be doing the dilution thing again.

my idea to totally ignore them came from a story I recently wrote about a KKK rally in Wilmington Vermont in 1982. The locals just ignored them - in fact, residents actually organized a number of family events to take place around town at the same time as the KKK rally. That left the KKK and a communist student group from KSC to shout at each other. The whole thing lasted about an hour. No violence.

I'll post the story here in a couple weeks. After it has had a chance to hit the stands.

I have a question for the parents out there. How do you raise kids to be open-minded and free of hate? It's scary seeing the birthers, deathers, and tea baggers along with the Limbo's, Beaudry's and other hate outlets. Should you shelter kids from this or expose them and let them know how crazy these people are and why they are wrong?
Any suggestions?

I think you start by teaching them the positive values you'd like them to embrace. (0.00 / 0)

I would keep emphasizing that until they are at an appropriate age to understand that there are those who do not share these values, some of whom get far more of a public forum for their ideas than they deserve. That age would be for you the parent to determine, based on the questions they ask and whether or not they are going to encounter these people in their lives. If you routinely talk with your kids honestly about lots of interesting and challenging ideas, they'll always value your perspective on issues they encounter as they grow older; and they'll never lose your positive influence.

I think that everyone should ignore them completely, but do it completely naked and holding hands. They think we are heathens, so lets show them that we don't care what they think, and do it in a way that they find immoral, but is legal here. I think ignoring the confrontation sends a profound message about who we Vermonters are: a tolerant, peace loving people. These people are KRAZY with a capital KKK! Their only hope for fifteen minutes of fame is lost if we refuse to notice they are here. I really do think they are the equivalent of the folks who are off their meds and wandering the streets of New York muttering obscenities. I am optimistic that little bands of loonies like these are not the leading edge of a sinister tomorrow. I think the last election proved that we are inevitably heading into a more progressive future. It is that inevitability that brings out the panicked crazies for one last go-round.
