Overheard at the State House . . .

by: Jack McCullough

Fri May 29, 2009 at 12:00:00 PM EDT

UPDATE: In response to our query, GMD has heard from Brian Dubie.
He specifically denies having made any decision about whether to run for reelection, and says that he isn't going to make any decisions until after the session is over. He does say that he's always encouraging other people to run for office, though.

Amazing the things you can hear if you keep your ears open.

We don't know that it's for sure, definitely true, but GMD has been hearing from reliable sources that Lite Gov Brian Dubie is definitely not running for reelection.

True? It's a bit early to be sure, but if he does step aside this soon it may leave the Republican field open for Barre Mayor and Jim Douglas Pie Bodyguard and marijuana flip-flopper Thom Lauzon. After all, the Republican bench is pretty skimpy, and Lauzon has made no secret of his interest in moving to the copilot's seat.  (note: some more of Lauzon's greatest hits, including advocating for the death penalty for drug dealers, can be found here and here. - odum)

Given that Floyd Nease is also considering a run for Lite Gov from the D side, this step would seem to create an excellent opportunity for our side to pick up one of the few statewide offices not in Democratic hands. Nease has already demonstrated his expertise with the legislative process, and his work as majority leader has given him the statewide exposure that Lauzon lacks. Still, the down ticket races can be unpredictable, especially with the attention the governor's race is likely to get next year.

Very interesting (0.00 / 0)
So, what does Dubie plan to do, now? What other job will let him spend as little time in the office for such good pay (not that I'm encouraging him to stay)?

Make this be true and let Lauzon run. Races are always so much more fun when one of the candidates is batshit insane.

Helpful Tip (0.00 / 2)
Next time, it might be helpful if you contact the source of your story before printing what that source thinks. Because, otherwise, it looks kind of funny to have your "update" of the story read: "We just contacted (the source)...". Know what I mean? Just saying...

Words without action are the ruin of the soul.

Does he know something we don't? (0.00 / 0)
So, Dubie says - -

and says that he isn't going to make any decisions until after the session is over
.

If I have this right we're talking about two business days from now.

If Dubie isn't running again, could it be that he's figuring to run for the number one slot cause he knows Gov. D is getting out of the way?

Doubt it (0.00 / 0)
The man wasn't qualified to be Lt. Gov, and would be the ticket to Republican defeat if he tried for higher office.

Not to conflate two separate threads here, but the real question is whether Paul Poirier is thinking of running for Gov. as an I, although he wouldn't be able to avoid the same spoiler issues as any third party candidate faces, and if he's pro-labor, he for sure won't be siphoning off any of DoesLess's votes.

Dubie's looked at a Senate run... (0.00 / 0)
He raised money in 2006 before Rich Tarrant hopped in to the race.  I'm pretty sure his only stopping point was that he still had children in school here and didn't want to be away from them.  But his youngest daughter graduates high school next year (she's in my class), and my understanding hasn't been that he's looking to get out of politics all together.

I'd think it more likely for him to make a token senate run vs. Leahy than run for Governor.  It'd either be his idea of positioning himself with moderate voters for a potential match-up with Sanders, or an attempt to run a solid campaign and hope someone from the D.C. area code comes calling.

Either way thought, I think we all know that he's not the kind of hands on manager who would want to serve as Governor

Sidenote: after hearing Tom Salmon talk on VPR yesterday... (0.00 / 0)
...I think he's planning to run for Lt Gov.

I've been waiting for a place to ask this (0.00 / 0)
Is there ANY reason the party hopped behind Salmon other than his last name?

And I don't intend for my above question to be negative (0.00 / 0)
I just legitimately have never heard anything that's led me to believe he had any sort of political credentials that we actively sought out.  Just hoping someone older than I could fill me in on how he wound up running in the first place.

I dont generally make comments like this... (0.00 / 0)
...but I would back Nease in less than a heartbeat over Salmon. My concerns about Salmon have grown quite a bit recently.

Underwhelming performance (0.00 / 0)
Tom Salmon was sad and most unimpressive on VPR .His support for a statewide referendum on casino gambling in the middle of a recession(or anytime)is troublesome. It was his gimmick issue from last Fall if I remember.

Is there any movement within the Dem Party to discourage Dems from running for Lt. Gov and support a Prog candidate in that election, since that seems to be what most of the Progs are trying to do for the Gov. race right now...Just saying, that it would be nice for the 2 parties to work together on a D/P ticket for those 2 races, and win them both!

Not what's happening exactly (0.00 / 0)
There's no movement within the Dem Party to discourage Progs to support a Dem per se - there's Doug Racine encouraging Progs to support him, and getting some response. Markowitz has said we can't worry about Progs at the institutional level (although she talking to individuals), and Bartlett has made no move that I've heard of (and those are the three that have filed).

The point is, there's nothing formal or institutional. It's one guy (Doug) making his pitch, rather than some collective decision about who gets given what slot or the other by the powers that be in the different parties. I wouldn't expect Progs to back off completely if the Dem is someone they didn't like, or at least respected.

candidate? (0.00 / 0)
For that to happen at all, there would first need to be an announced candidate that Dems could consider (individually and at the party level).
