Home in Vermont: Vintage Howard Dean

by: Maggie Gundersen

Sun Feb 22, 2009 at 18:24:50 PM EST

Hosted by Liz and Eric Miller, last night's fundraiser for the Vermont Democratic Party was a great first step in putting the VDP back in business since the Democratic National Committee has stopped funding State Parties.

Burlington Photographer Carolyn Bates released the following photo of elected Vermont Democrats in attendance at this VDP Fundraiser.  Many more photos will be popping up on the VDP website and other venues as Carolyn was photographing non-stop.

From left to right: Acting Vermont Democratic Party Chair Judy Bevans, Senate President Pro-Tem Peter Shumlin, Former Governor Howard Dean, Attorney General Bill Sorrell, Chittenden County State's Attorney TJ Donovan, Secretary of State Deb Markowitz, and State Representative Joey Donovan.  Speaker of the House Shap Smith and Senator Doug Racine, who were also in attendance, left prior to this photo shoot for previously scheduled events.

As usual Howard was warm, approachable and full of humor.  He regaled the group with humorous stories while reminding everyone that now was not the time to let up.  Using the health care issue as an example, Howard noted that now the hard work must begin.  It is time, he admonished, to make sure that all Dems become more progressive rather than compromising our party's principals in order to win a few Republican votes.

Transparency in Government is one of my pet peeves, so I love how up close and personal Vermont Politics are.  As Howard reminded all of us, Vermont politics is about people, people involved in their community governments with the vehicle of town meeting.

I moved to Vermont from Connecticut in 2001 only 2 weeks prior to September 11.  I hated the Bush years. Connecticut's Governor John Rowland, later indicted on fraud and put in jail for one year, was the first Governor to endorse President Bush, and was being considered for a cabinet post, until his penchant for using other people's money came to the surface.  For five years, I was a newspaper reporter in Connecticut, first with two award-winning weeklies and then for a daily newspaper, which I thought would be the ultimate gig.  It wasn't.  I went from two award-winning weekly newspapers to the one daily paper in our rural part of Connecticut.  It was the paper that was the machine behind Governor Rowland's election.  That paper, The Waterbury Republican-American, would not even allow us, mere reporters that we were, to cover Democratic party candidates unless we had an OK from the editors or publishers.  After working for a year, primarily on the police beat, I went into teaching.

Last night's event was about people.  I thank my neighbors Eric and Liz Miller for hosting last night's Howard Dean Welcome Home VDP fundraising event along with Arthur and Anne Berndt, Tom and Susan Boswell, Hon. TJ Donovan, Crea and Phil Lintilhac, Hon. Deb Markowitz, Hon. Doug Racine, Hon. Peter and Deb Shumlin, Hon. Bill Sorrell, Jane and Bill Stetson, Hon. Shap Smith & Melissa Volansky, and Steve Waltien.  I also thank Selene Hofer-Shall for her vision, energy and work to put together such an event as a way of jump starting the almost empty VDP account!

Dean - - health care - - other dems? (0.00 / 0)
We do things upside down.

I can't help but imagine a United States where health care and the workplace are two separate things.  Such a better place.

Did we miss an opportunity to finally divorce the two with the stimulus package?

No - - there is no way a stimulus package based on fixing the health care/work disaster would have gotten the necessary votes.

So, I agree with Dean - -we have a huge fight ahead to turn this country around on this issue.  However, Dean never espoused a divorcing of health care and the workplace coverage/funding.

Do Democrats really represent CHANGE or just a change?

PJ

Dean spoke about how hard the insurance companies are fighting to gut and change the proposal from what Obama originally promised while campaigning.  The Obama plan was about as far as Americans were willing to go at this time, but Dean is concerned that now many Dems and Republicans are attempting to "modify" that plan under lobbyist pressure.  The key provision that may be on the chopping block is that people may choose to keep private insurance or choose medicare.  Dean sees this provision as a gradual weaning of people from the private health care industry, which is why lobbyists are pressuring the White House to remove that provision.

Dean urged everyone to keep the heat on.  To meet that demand, I urge everyone to email and call the White House to let the Obama team know that we all want the White House to keep its campaign promise.

I wish I had brought a tape recorder to get his whole speech.  He was brilliant.  Then I could relay funny stories and his clear push for all of us to keep on moving forward on a progressive agenda.  As a former reporter, I am note or tape dependent and as a paralegal I'm into fact checking, so I can't give you much more.  Sorry.  :(

I dunno... (4.00 / 5)
"The Obama plan was about as far as Americans were willing to go at this time, "

I suspect Americans (as in actual American people, not timid politicians or insurance companies) would be willing to go a heck of a lot further than that.

You can read JD's latest at five before chaos. Politics. Godlessness. Music. Films of questionable quality. It's all there, folks.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
And, Dean would agree, but there is a lot of push back from many others...which is why he was asking us all to push the White House to stick with its early plan.

Dean said that the key aspect of change in health care is that people are afraid that they will be denied access to their regular health care providers.  Obama's original plan had that feature built in along w/ the medicare provision.

Personally, I wonder about those states, like Vermont, Connecticut, Oregon, and others, that have health care reimbursement for naturopaths, while there is no "national" recognition for naturopaths.  Same with chiropractic.  Some states give equal coverage and others, like VT, only give limited insurance reimbursement.

Personally, I believe in universal health care, but I want some of that care to be represented by wellness care as in chiro and naturopathic care.

I have a friend, who is undergoing prostate issues.  His insurance has been VT's Freedom Plan w/ BCBS for small businesses.  He and his wife have one teenager and have had almost no claims and his current bill had been moved to $1900/mo.  They were going to give up all insurance because they could not afford such an astronomical bill?  My gosh, who could?  BCBS has "moved them" to a less expensive policy, but I question what happened to all they paid for nothing!

I know others in similar positions as my friend above.  Many of them are terrified w/ the concept of universal health care, because the insurance industry did so much negative advertising against it.  Using Canada as an example, the industry said that people would end up waiting weeks and months for treatment, which is what most people wait now.  I know that 2 years ago, when I was sent for testing, I had to wait 9 weeks to see an endocrinologist here in Vermont with my BCBS insurance, because there is a shortage of such doctors in VT.  My Canadian friends love their coverage and their wait to see their doctors, even specialists, is actually much shorter than ours now!

Glad to see he is now pushing progressive policy back here at home (4.00 / 2)
I know...Howard Dean is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I should not write anything about him that is not positive as pie.

If he really wants to be progressive rather than just use the word, lets see him run for Governor with a single payer platform.

Or, if he has been Governor enough (fair enough) he could go all over the state pushing Douglas to support a Snelling type of income tax surcharge to remedy the short term revenue shortfall we are facing.

Howard Dean has a tremendous amount of political capital in Vermont.  He could be a real driving force for progressive policy this year and next.

I am sure there are a number of other progressive policies that we could use his help on.  The votes are there in the House and Senate if we can get everyone in the D party on board.  We do not even need either I (D's = 95, P's = 5, 95 + 5 = 100...veto override).

Rather than focussing on party politics right now, we should all be focussing on good policy.  We have 2 months left in the session.  Then Gov. Douglas gets to destroy our government for another 7 months before the legislature returns.

I am always amazed... (4.00 / 1)
Thanks Dave

I am always amazed at the pace the legislature works.  I follow many bills and issues, and it is dizzying to try to follow what goes on in the legislature while working full time.

Rather than focussing on party politics right now, we should all be focussing on good policy.  We have 2 months left in the session.  Then Gov. Douglas gets to destroy our government for another 7 months before the legislature returns.

I agree.  I am thankful for all the Democrat and Progressive legislators who are doing so much to try to move legislation that protects all Vermonters and our cherished environment.  I wish legislators had more time and a spring and fall session, and I wish they were paid more money.  Their pace is exhausting.  I am not advocating big government, but I continuously observe the speedy progress frequently made by unfriendly out-of-state businesses when the legislature is not in session, and the right checks and balances are not in place.

I too would like to see Dean bring his progressive action home to Vermont.

Dean for Gov? (0.00 / 0)
Not likely, but it would be interesting. One could say that the new progressive Dean, who emerged from the 2004 campaign, would be running for a first term.

Seriously, I agree that Dean should focus real energy on advancing progressive policies n Vermont.
