There's plenty we can do to attack Palin without making it obscene. Musician, Web Designer, Photographer
demean Verb 1. to undermine the status or dignity of (someone or something) 2. demean oneself to do something unworthy of one's status or character
I agree with Julie that this video and the others I viewed from the link are misogynistic in their demeaning nature. Moreover, I believe such emphasis demeans the great blogging at GMD. GMD's convention coverage was awesome. It was serious, funny, irreverent, thought provoking, and covered so many angles and issues that I have found myself rereading parts again and again.
In my mind, viewing this video would be like having all of our male readers and writers view a series of videos about Bill Clinton with the infamous blue dress and whatever other ingenious props might be used or seeing Edwards (and others who dropped out of this campaign cycle and have similar womanizing traits) walking around with their zippers open as they brush $400 haircuts or photoshopping them doing dance gyrations as Chippendales.
I believe that instead of thinking it was funny or sexy or some such analysis, male readers might feel demeaned by such portrayals and would also understand that such sexist frivolity demeans the important role of GMD's blog.
It was a post I wanted to pull... and did not. Hopefully the dialogue will engender more thoughtful analysis to this whole campaign season and the campaign issues of race and sex which seem to be obliterating all other discussions regarding the war, the economy, failing schools, our crumbling bridges and infrastructure, and no salient energy plan.
The consistent question everyone I know is asking is: Why did McCain pick Palin? Some people have said to attract the Hillary vote --- women who felt the Democratic party let them down. Others are saying that picking a youngish, sexy, and seemingly naive female mother of five, who is married to an outdoorsy roughneck type of guy will appeal to all the angry white males who believe that Barack Obama should not be president because he is black or because he is allegedly either muslim or hates whites. Either way, let's not feed the frenzy, unless it is to evoke this type of serious discussion.
-- Religion is like sodomy: both can be harmless when practiced between consenting adults but neither should be imposed upon children.
I'm not sure how important or relevant this all is, but it's adding to the general sense of something about this being not quite right.
On the other hand, maybe this is the solution to his now-legendary problem with reading teleprompters - placement.
If she walks on a stage positioned a little to the front of him with a big square piece of glass hanging from her rear everytime he needs to make an important address, we'll know. Nullius perfectus est
When we watched this, I was saying "well, if it's just his habit of looking down a lot while someone else is speaking, why is he always looking down and to his left?"
Personally, I think it's because he's a POW.
Seriously, though, I think it's relevant. If the man who wants to be one of the leaders of the free world is busy checking out the ass of the woman he "thinks" is qualified to be his second in command, it suggests to me that he's got a serious impulse control problem. Musician, Web Designer, Photographer
It's really, really gross, and stupid. I'm glad people caught it. Nullius perfectus est
Is that where we want to go during this campaign?
Isn't that what the mainstream, traditional, legacy, corporate media does? How many times during the campaign did we see Chris Matthews criticize Hillary's dress, hairstyle, etc? Is that where we are going?
But I'm not sure what the comparison is.... those were both funny in their own way... this is, like, funny/creepy/mocking.
Its McCain being criticized, here. He's being mocked and belittled for engaging in a gross display of objectification without apparent care for who is watching. In a "Daily Show" sort of style, sure, but that's always been a side of this blog as well.
How do you interpret this video, because you're clearly seeing something very different than I am seeing. It sounds as though you are seeing it as some sort of agreement with/celebration of McCain's leering. I'd be curious if others see it that way as well. Nullius perfectus est
Hillary's hairstyles and fat ankles, Obama's funny sounding middle name, his blackness, or his too whiteness, his mouthy wife, his imaginary Muslim religion and terrorist fist-bumps, his lousy bowling and his great b-ball playing, McCain calling his wife the c-word and his imaginary cross in the sand, etc. etc. is what interests an angry, paranoid electorate. Our presidential election process is this falling empire's version of the gladiators at the Colosseum.
The selection of Palin is a cynical ploy, but not a stupid one if all you want to do is get elected. And going after her could be like going after Br'er Rabbit or Tar Baby. It's going to be hard to do without reflecting badly on you, especially if you are male. Hers is the 2008 female version of the Clarence "Uncle" Thomas nomination, designed to undercut debate on the future of women/minorities/LGBTs and their issues, not further it.
Our "friends" on the right almost to a man (and woman) are against the freedom to choose, against equal rights for women (and absolutely paranoid about equal rights for LGBTs and froth at the mouth about gay marriage), and only feel safe when they are packing the biggest baddest gun they can. And they either think the environment isn't as important as it is, or that it's a big joke.
Palin is right behind all these positions. This is a thoroughly disgusting candidate - gundamnentalist, fundamnentalist, anti-environmentalist - no matter her gender.
The other rub is, even if we stick to these issues, come November it won't be enough.
The trash that starts this thread is much more apropo to FreeRepublic or RedState, but apparently there are supposed anti-right wingers ready, willing and happy to act just like them.
Pitiful.
I could go on about how I don't see any real difference in results delivered by today's Dem and Repub politicians, but I'm sure it would skip right over many heads. It's over at http://ramabahama.net ... only it's still under construction (but so is the rest of my life)
And as to this:

You mean "under" considering that sort of thing tends to come out of people's ass. Usually when people are sad, they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change.
Gettin' awfully sensitive to others expressing their opinion, aren't you? It's over at http://ramabahama.net ... only it's still under construction (but so is the rest of my life)
