Does Entergy have ANY equipment which functions properly?

by: JulieWaters

Sat May 17, 2008 at 05:39:51 AM EDT

Today's Brattleboro Reformer reports on yet another incident at Vermont Yankee:

Technicians were in the process of moving the cask from the reactor's spent fuel pool to a concrete storage pad outside the plant when the cask dropped to the floor.

The crane had operated with no problems during demonstration runs that were performed for the NRC during the past month, said Williams.

But wait: it gets better:

The fuel assemblies are being moved out of the spent fuel pool because it is has no room for any more.

Without the fuel transfer, the pool would remain full, forcing Vermont Yankee to shut down.

Sometimes I just can't believe that we rely on this stuff for anything

Repair habits (4.00 / 3)
I got looking around at Vermont Yankee 'stuff' yesterday and found a  newsletter by New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution from  Feb.2000 before Entergy purchased VY .They  speculate on how Entergy will manage to run an aging and money losing plant at a profit when it's former owners could not .Here is a quote that is relevant to maintenance and perhaps the overall attitude .....
Vermont Yankee has pushed the plant to its rated margins. Entergy will press NRC to operate the plant at greater than its licensed capacity. In lay parlance, it has already been run, "pedal-to-the-metal." It will now be "souped-up...This is much like shortening the ground time of a commercial passenger aircraft by doing repairs while it is in the air. Entergy will do this while setting the equivalent of air and speed records.
This was eight years back .Most of this latest safety /security news really should get more than Friday afternoon and Saturday morning newspaper play, maybe a headline.

here is link to the 2000 newsletter good historical reminders ... http://www.necnp.org/files/new...

Blame the snack room (4.00 / 1)
That's the last straw.  They've got to get the beer machine out of the snack room.

Now wait a second (0.00 / 0)
Some employee benefits are just too integral to moral. Safety starts with an appreciative work force.
