| This is what American Spectator says a "senior Pelosi staffer" supposedly said:
"First, [Democrats] failed on the radio airwaves with Air America, no one wanted to listen," says a senior adviser to Pelosi. "Conservative radio is a huge threat and political advantage for Republicans and we have had to find a way to limit it. Second, it looks like the Republicans are going to have someone in the presidential race who has access to media in ways our folks don't want, so we want to make sure the GOP has no advantages going into 2008."
INSTANT failure of smell test.
That last sentence "appears to be" a reference to replicant Presidential candidate Fred Thompson, says American Spectator.
And they should know, since it seems they made the whole thing up.
The American Spectator piece in question deals with reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine.
Here is the lede:
SALEM'S WITCH TRIAL
According to two members of the House Democrat Caucus, Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer have informed them that they will "aggressively pursue" reinstatement of the so-called Fairness Doctrine over the next six months.
Emphasis mine, and that would be DemocratIC caucus, if you don't mind terribly.
The "Salem" in question refers to Salem Communications, a Christian conservative broadcasting network whose program lineup speaks for itself.
The article also asserts that Rep. Dennis Kucinich's office is investigating Salem. As I write this, it's past closing time, so the press folks in Dennis' office were out for the night, so I can't confirm that for you.
Here's another stinky:
"They are identifying senior employees, their political activities and their political giving," says a Government Reform committee staffer. "Salem is a big target, but the big one is going to be Limbaugh. We know we can't shut him up, but we want to make life a bit more difficult for him."
Ya gotta love those anonymous sources.
Jumping back to the quote from a "senior Pelosi staffer", I spoke with Brendan Daly in Nancy Pelosi's office (I ATTRIBUTE my sources) and he told me that the "quote" is, "completely made up."
And I have his permission to quote him on that.
It's bullshit.
In no uncertain terms.
Now renewal of the Fairness Doctrine may indeed be in the pipeline - I sure hope so - but as far as American Spectator goes, I see what their stylebook says to do when they can't flesh out a story, in time-tested wingnut style, they make shit up.
Wow. A conservative journal lied.
Maybe this isn't newsworthy after all. |
