  • White voters are divided, as 50 percent say he is fit and 48 percent say he is not fit. Trump is not fit, black voters say 94 – 4 percent and Hispanic voters say 60 – 40 percent.
  • Men are divided 49 – 49 percent, as women say 63 – 35 percent he is not fit.

On President Trump’s handling of race relations: American voters disapprove 62 – 32 percent of the way President Trump is handling race relations. Disapproval is 55 – 39 percent among white voters, 95 – 3 percent among black voters and 66 – 28 percent among Hispanic voters. President Trump is doing more to divide the country than to unite the country, American voters say 60 – 35 percent. Trumps3strikes

Looking forward, according to Quinnipiac polling, voters also say 49 – 40 percent including 47 – 34 percent among independent voters they would like to see Democrats win control of the U.S. Senate next year. Got to hope that comes soon enough. Or is that hope too audacious ?

Methodology: The poll was conducted from September 21 – 26, and surveyed 1,412 voters nationwide. Quinnipiac pollsters conducted live interviewers by calling landlines and cell phones. The results have a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.

  1. Any hope that because less than half of independent voters would like to see Democrats control the U. S. Senate we will see Chuck Schumer as Majority Leader is indeed too audacious. The old saw, “A pessimist is a well-informed optimist” comes to mind.

In the 2014 mid-term elections Congress had a 15% approval rating; in 2016 it had sunk to 11%. Yet, Mitch McConnell is still Majority Leader.

The 2018 Senate map heavily favors Republicans, who will only defend eight seats, just a couple of which are considered vulnerable. By comparison, Democrats have to defend 25 seats, including 10 in states that Trump won in 2016.

Which brings us to Trump. He won with 46.2 % of the vote despite record low approval ratings. So now the Quinnipiac poll finds that 36% of American voters approve of Trump’s performance as President; 42% see him as fit to serve. If he can maintain his core appeal in the high thirty percent range, all he needs to pick up is another 10% or so to reach or exceed his 2016 winning margin.

In 2018 and 2020 the time-tested Republican game plan will be used again: Portray “the left” as morally repulsive as well as uniquely threatening to “ordinary Americans.” Demonize the other side so completely that just enough people vote not so much as Republicans but as Anti-Democrats. Combine that push with targeted acts of voter suppression in heavily Democratic districts of key swing states and any hope (audacious or glimmering) is dashed – again.
