I had not read that history in depth, nor realized about how closely it was tied to white paranoia about racism, but I had read about Du pont wanting it illegal in order to stifle competition for their products. With a war coming they would get awfully rich. In the US whenever anything like this happens, somebody that stands to make a great deal of money is usually behind it. It was sickening about Hearst. I knew that he had largely manufactured the Spanish-American war to sell more newspapers, but this was beyond the pale, even for him.
